Discovery Early Education & Care Centre World Music Day Entry

Here at Discovery we celebrated World Music Day with the children creating beautiful sounds using the “Gas Gongs”.

We have purchased “Gas Gongs” from a local small business who through a desire to care for the environment has made the instruments from local, reclaimed gas bottles.

Did you know that hundreds of gas bottles are thrown away each day, most of which end up in Australian landfill?

These beautiful “Gas Gongs” are precisely tuned to various pentatonic (5 note) or heptatonic (7 notes) scales and can be played with rubber mallets or using our hands.

The children, in all age groups, at Discovery, have been enjoying the freedom to experiment with the relationship between sound and colour (each drum is a different colour and pitch). We have even found the babies (0-2s) have been delighting in the soothing sound, vibration and visual stimulation the drums provide. One child even articulated that when playing the “Gas Gong” they “feel calm.”

The “Gas Gongs” have been incorporated in the outdoor environment, amongst the plants and bushes, and the sounds the children produce when playing these send a tranquil vibe through the playground.
