What is World Braille Day?

World Braille Day is celebrated on January 4th each year as it is Louis Braille, inventor of Braille's, birthday. World Braille Day is a reminder of the importance of accessibility and independence for people who are blind or visually impaired. 


When is World Braille Day?

Activities:

  • Sensory play: Create tactile experiences by providing materials like braille alphabet cards or textured surfaces for children to explore. They can feel and trace the raised dots.
  • Storytime: Read books that feature braille to help understand the importance of braille.
  • Craft: Encourage children to create their own braille messages using materials like clay or beads – help understand it’s use in communication.
  • Braille Alphabet game: Teach children the braille alphabet and have them practice by matching braille letters to corresponding pictures.
  • Guest speaker – Invite someone knowledgeable about braille to talk to children.
