For quite some time, new entrants into the early childhood education and care (aka child care or childcare) sector have solely relied on the advice of their accountants, lawyers, business advisors, family and friends to build and operate a new daycare service, or even buy an existing one to refurbish, operate and in time expand.
But there appear to be too many new entrants who have too often find themselves overwhelmed with the significant complexity of the legislation, regulations and bureaucratic red tape, not to mention the seismic challenges of childcare oversupply (and therefore heightened competition among service providers), severe labour shortages, and the ever-rising cost of real estate.
As the peak body representing privately-owned early childhood education and care service providers (ie owners and operators) who run 1,600 services across New South Wales, the Australian Childcare Alliance (ACA) NSW offers new entrants with a series of training sessions and webinars that can help demystify all the technicalities and introduce you to experts and suppliers to help you in your journey. The two most important being:
Help with NSW's service approval process (register here) - Before you even start, you need approvals from the NSW Department of Education to become an approved provider as well as a service provider. This session will help you understand everything there is to know about the approvals process, the laws and regulations, and what to expect in the government's test.
Getting the CCS Application Process to work for services and families (register here) - As most of your customers (ie parents) will probably rely on government subsidy to help pay for their children's childcare fees with you, this session will help you understand what business structures the Federal Government prefers, how the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) application process works, as well as what information you need to have to ensure the CCS is approved in a timely fashion for your service.
Other useful training sessions and webinars are also available from ACA NSW's very popular Quickies (because they are only 2 hours long or less). These include:
How to design successful Early Childhood Education and Care Centres
Maximising & managing staff performance … LEGALLY
How to create best of class policies and documentation
Secrets of what to do during A&R visits
Creating the best possible QIP/Self-Assessment Tool submission for the “new” NQF
Multiplying success after your first Service - the foundational elements to replicate success
Improving Services from Fair to Fantastic!
How to ensure you are ready for a spotcheck/compliance visit
You also may want to sit in on ACA NSW's Network Meetings where approved providers (ie owners), centre directors and educational leaders would come together to learn, understand and discuss the sector's current and upcoming issues and solutions for their businesses.
New entrants needing access to all the template policies, documents, advice and industry information might like to consider becoming a member of the Australian Childcare Alliance NSW. And for any further information, you can always contact ACA NSW on 1300 556 330 or via nsw@childcarealliance.org.au.
The Australian Childcare Alliance (ACA) NSW has put together a series of short but to the point presentations that help existing and new providers. The ACA NSW Quickies sessions are only 2 hours or less and held throughout the year. They bring Approved Providers, Owners, Directors and Educational Leaders with industry-specific information, advice, tips and even “tricks”.

Getting the CCS Application Process to work for services and families
When the new Commonwealth Government’s Child Care Subsidy (CCS) was introduced in 1 July 2018, the application process for services to receive CCS changed significantly as well. This has resulted in more stringent requirements and the biggest change being now that there is no guarantee of subsidies being granted to every childcare operator with service approval. It has also affected application processing time with some services waiting up to 6 months for approval from the Federal Government even after obtaining service approval from the NSW Department of Education. This has for some greatly affected cashflow and business viability.
One of ACA NSW’s responsibilities to help our members and the approved provider community navigate this “new” and still evolving process which is why we have Lisa McGhee from Childcare Focus as our presenter and facilitator. She has provided expert knowledge into this process and helped her clients to successful and timely outcomes.
This ACA NSW Quickies session is designed for those approved providers and new entrants into the sector who want to understand the foundations of the Federal Government’s CCS application process and what approved providers need to do to ensure their service's success to begin receiving CCS. This session will include:
What kinds of information exactly is the Federal Government looking for and why?
What criteria do I need to meet to ensure there is no extended delays?
Can the legal structure of my service negatively affect the CCS application process? Are family trusts allowed or not allowed?
When can I start my application to meet my service opening deadline?
What are the internal systems that a service must have that are critical to the CCS Application?
If you are an existing provider, or about to open a new service about to apply for CCS, or have just purchased a service, then come along to this webinar to get the “insider” information on how to ensure success for your CCS Application for success.
The 2020 sessions are as follows:
Friday, 7 February 2020, from 10 am to 11 am, via webinar [COMPLETED]
Monday, 4 May 2020, from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm, via webinar [COMPLETED]

Australia Day is the national day of Australia celebrating the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. It is a day to celebrate all the things that people love about the country of Australia.
When is Australia Day celebrated?
Thursday, January 26th
What do people do to celebrate?
Since Australia Day takes place in the summer "down under", many people celebrate the day with outdoor events. There are plenty of large public events to attend such as music festivals, sports competitions, fireworks shows, and community awards ceremonies. Many people attend these events or just have a gathering of their own family and friends where they may have a barbecue or picnic to celebrate the day.
A lot of people fly the Australian National Flag on this day. They may also fly the Aboriginal Flag or the Torres Strait Islander Flag.
The single largest event held this day is the City of Perth Skyworks. Around half a million people attend this annual fireworks show that is held over the Swan River in Perth. It is a huge fireworks show where fireworks have been launched from bridges, moving boats, and even skyscrapers.
History of Australia Day
On January 26, 1788 the First Fleet under Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove in Australia and claimed the land for Great Britain. The First Fleet was made up mostly of prisoners who established a penal colony in Australia.
The 26th was celebrated early on as the anniversary of the landing date of the First Fleet. For the first 100 years the day was celebrated mostly by people in New South Wales. Other colonies had their own foundation days that they celebrated.
In 1888, one hundred years after the First Fleet landed, all of the colony capitals but Adelaide celebrated the day as Anniversary Day. By 1935 all the states celebrated the 26th as Anniversary Day.
In 1946 the day was renamed to Australia Day.
Fun Facts About Australia Day
It is estimated that over half of Australia's 21 million citizens participate in celebrating this day.
During the 1988 Bicentennial Celebration (200 years) over 2.5 million people attended the celebration in Sydney.
Boat races such as the ferry race and the tall ships race are held in Sydney Harbor on this day.
Citizenship ceremonies are a big part of the day. In 2011 around 13,000 people became citizens on this day.
There has been criticism of the day by the Indigenous Peoples of Australia. There are also a number of alternative dates that some people would like to use for the national day.
Out of the 1000 people who arrived on the First Fleet, around 700 were prisoners.
Since 1960 the Australian of the Year has been awarded on this day. Past winners include actor Geoffrey Rush, cricket player Steve Waugh, and painter Arthur Boyd.
