Australian National Flag Day

What is Australian National Flag Day?

Australian National Flag Day commemorates the day in 1901 when the Australian National Flag was first flown. Australians reflect on the significance of the flag and its role in representing the nation. Australians celebrate this day by participating in different events and activities.

When is Australian National Flag Day?

Tuesday, September 3

Activities:

  • Flag Making: Provide children with materials like coloured paper, markers, glue, and stickers to create their own Australian flags. Teach them about the symbolism of the flag's colours and symbols, such as the Southern Cross and the Union Jack.
  • Flag Painting: Set up a painting station with paper and paint in the colours of the Australian flag (blue, red, and white). Let children use their fingers, brushes, or sponges to create their own flag-inspired artwork.
  • Flag Collage: Provide children with magazines, newspapers, and other materials with images of the Australian flag, animals, landmarks, and symbols. Encourage them to cut out these images and create collages representing Australia.
  • Flag Parade: Organize a flag parade where children can march around the childcare centre or playground carrying small Australian flags. Play patriotic music and encourage children to wave their flags proudly.
  • Flag Dance Party: Host a flag-themed dance party where children can dance to Australian music while waving small flags. Encourage them to move creatively and expressively as they celebrate Australia Day.
