Dental Health Week

What is Dental Health Week?

Dental Health Week is an annual campaign, initiated by the Australian Dental Association. This week is dedicated to promoting good oral health habits and raises awareness about the importance of dental care. Educational activities, events and initiatives are implemented to encourage Australians to prioritise their dental health to prevent dental issues.

When is Dental Health Week?

Sunday, August 4 - 10

Activities:

  • Group Time: Have a class discussion with the children about the importance of tooth brushing and healthy eating to promote dental health.
  • Toothbrushing demonstration: Demonstrate toothbrushing using a model. Show children how to brush in circular motions on all sides of the teeth, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces. Also, emphasis on brushing twice a day.
  • Healthy food sorting: Provide a white healthy-looking tooth and a yellow unhealthy tooth, and food pictures. Encourage the children to sort through the photos, placing the ‘unhealthy for your teeth” on the yellow tooth and the “healthy for your teeth” on the white tooth.
  • Story Time: Read a book to the children related to dental hygiene, brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist.
  • Dentist Visit Experience: Arrange for a visit from a dentist to the childcare centre. During the visit, the dentist will talk to the children about the importance of dental health, demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques, and answer any questions they may have.
