What is Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year falls on the 10th February 2024, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on 24th February 2024. Celebrations can last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 are considered a public holiday. Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon.

  • Discuss what Chinese New Year is - investigate if there is anyone in the centre who celebrates it 
  • Discuss what food is eaten during Chinese New Year & taste teste these foods
  • Discuss what clothing is worn during Chinese New Year & dress up
  • Share with families events they can attend during the Chinese New Year 
  • Make Chinese Lanterns: Get creative and make colourful lanterns using paper, markers, and strings. Hang them up to bring some festive vibes to your space.
  • Red Envelope craft: Teach children about the tradition of giving red envelopes during Chinese New Year.
  • Dumpling making: Teach children how to make traditional Chinese dumplings.
  • Lion Dance and Craft: Teach children about the lion dance and its importance during Chinese New Year. Children can create their own lion mask using paper bags/or paper plates, construction paper and craft sticks.
  • Group time: Read books about Chinese New Year and its traditions to the children.
