What is Rosh Hoshana?

Rosh Hoshana is the Jewish New Year, symbolising the beginning of the High Holy Days. This is a time for reflection, repentance, and renewal. The Jewish gather with their families and friends to pray and eat foods, wishing one another a happy and healthy year ahead.

Activities: 

  • Apple printing: cut apples in half and dip them in paint to create apple prints on paper. Discuss apples symbolising a sweet and fruitful new year
  • Shofar Craft: using materials such as paper towel rolls, and craft supplies, encourage the children to decorate their own shofar (ram’s horn)
  • Honey Tasting: set up a tasting station for the children to try honey, which is traditionally eaten to symbolise hope for a sweet new year
  • Blessing Discussion: gather in a circle and discuss what we are blessed and grateful for
