What is United Nations Day?

United Nations Day is observed each year to mark the anniversary of the United Nations Charter commencing in 1945. United Nations Day recognises the efforts already made, and to learn more about the UN’s work such as helping those who need it, protecting our environment, protecting human rights, and preventing conflict.

Activities: 

  • Flag making provide materials to the children to create flags of different countries, and to use their imagination to create a new flag for their own country
  • Flag parade: using the flags created, organise a parade where the children march around using their flags.
  • Story time: read stories which explore themes of diversity and unity
  • Cultural dress up: set up a cultural dress up corner where they can dress up and appreciate the different cultures
  • Musical dance party: using music from around the world featuring different languages, encourage the children to dance and celebrate diversity through their movements
  • Language exploration: learn different languages spoken around the world. Start with how to say ‘hello’ in different languages.
